Punita Arora, the first Lieutenant General of Indian Armed Forces and the first Vice admiral of Indian Navy, joined the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune in 1963.
She topped her batch. In 2004, she became the first woman officer to become the commandant of AFMC. Yet, it was only in 1992 that the Indian Army started accepting women. Priya Jhingan, one of the first 25 lady cadets who made it to the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, recalls laughing, "Our commanding officer almost hit the roof when he saw our trunks and the list of requests — warm water, tube lights and a saloon.” Sapper Shanti Tigga broke another stereotype when she became the first woman jawan of Indian army in 2011.
She was 25 at the time, had two children, and defeated all her male counterparts in physical fitness tests.
